OUTSIDE DYNA’S ROOM, I had a little one-on-one with Coalt in the hallway.

“She isn’t bad, right?” he said.

I smiled and embraced him, cuddling my head against his chest. “Why didn’t you ever tell me that my nemesis was a poor, confused girl?”

I felt his chest rumble against my cheek. “Oh, don’t be misled, my fiery princess. Dyna Colburn can handle her own. But, yes, she is quite young. Another reason I never would have wanted to marry her.”

“Don’t tell her that.”

“Oh, gods no. Fernus forfend, she’d have my balls in a vice and—” he cut himself off when he saw my amused expression. “Sorry. Vulgar.”

When I managed to wipe away my smile and separated from his chest, I said, “So what now? What do we do with her?”

“I’m not sure. We can’t exactly let her tag along, can we?”

“Probably not a great idea. People seeing the daughter of the empress by my side might give mixed signals. Remember, everyone on Caan basically thinks what I thought about her before today.”

“True. Wouldn’t want that.”

“No . . .” I trailed off, because I could tell we were both stalling.

There only seemed to be one answer, and it was staring us straight in our faces. Neither of us wanted to mention it because it was harsh and Dyna probably didn’t deserve it. Yet it had to be said.

I did the honors. “What about holding her for ransom? I know, I know, don’t look at me like that. It’s terrible.”

“Positively awful,” Coalt groaned. “You’re right, though—I think there’s only room for one Dragoness Queen in this party.”

“Ha. I suppose. You mean when she gets older she might try to usurp me to avenge her mother once I bring her down?”

Coalt shrugged. “Anything is possible. You want to avenge Queen Glendriana just the same.”

“True.” That made me think of something. “Might I ask where Dyna came from? I mean, if Orphea never had any mates.”

“Oh, the empress has certainly had romances. Just not a soul-bond. Dyna is a bastard. I think.” His brow knitted together at the last comment.

“Makes sense.” I ran a hand through my hair nervously. “I mean, we can’t just kill her. Obviously. We aren’t like that.”

“No, and that’s a horrible thing to even say.”

My mouth dropped open. “Excuse me? You were the one with your hand around her neck, lifting her off the ground and ready to squeeze the life out of her.”

“I know.” He couldn’t hide his smirk. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to see your reaction. I have no right to question any of your decisions, not after my, uh, questionable choices.”

“Questionable choices that go much further back than the swamp . . .”

He tossed his hands up. “What do you want me to say? I’m an asshole.”

My lips curled. “Say that holding Dyna for ransom doesn’t make me a terrible person. Lie to me.”

“It’s the only logical thing, Levia. Perhaps we can get an audience with Empress Orphea for the exchange, even. I mean, you don’t have anyone in particular you want to trade for Dyna, do you?”

I shook my head.
